Comment on Digital Curation: Adding Value to Digital Collections by Suzan Alteri http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/2014/04/16/digital-curation-adding-value-to-digital-collections/#comment-2964 Wed, 23 Apr 2014 21:47:00 +0000 http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/?p=375#comment-2964 Hi Micah!

I think that is an excellent question and certainly something we will want to discuss further. In addition to crowdsourcing I’m planning on offering some different definitions of digital curation – professional and personal – and also how to provide context to digital collections to further scholarship in the digital humanities. I am greatly looking forward to a lively discussion!

I’m looking forward to the conversation! I absolutely believe that the social aspects of digital curation are essential for the best outcomes and will focus on these aspects in our session. Social engagement improves access by helping to make search engine results display more prominently, especially for researchers who might not already be familiar with the collection.

Comment on Undergraduate Students and Digital Humanities by Micah Vandegrift http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/2014/04/15/undergraduate-students-and-digital-humanities/#comment-2960 Wed, 23 Apr 2014 20:46:18 +0000 http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/?p=361#comment-2960 I’d also like to ask a related question: is there a line between “multimedia projects” and “DH projects”? And from a pedagogy POV, do we hamper intellectual curiosity by including DH projects in the classroom that will be graded?

I love your sense of this issue Catelyn, and hope we can tackle your questions effectively!

Comment on Fair Use Strategies for Digital Humanities Projects by Micah Vandegrift http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/2014/04/16/fair-use-strategies-for-d/#comment-2957 Wed, 23 Apr 2014 20:39:40 +0000 http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/?p=370#comment-2957 I’d also like to see or hear of examples where perhaps DH projects have not been started, or have been cancelled over copyright concerns. Would be interesting to have a scale of how broadly fair use strategies might change the types of projects we could considering doing in the future.

Comment on Digital Curation: Adding Value to Digital Collections by Micah Vandegrift http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/2014/04/16/digital-curation-adding-value-to-digital-collections/#comment-2956 Wed, 23 Apr 2014 20:37:17 +0000 http://gainesville2014.thatcamp.org/?p=375#comment-2956 I like this a lot (especially because it overlaps with my interests in partnering with social/scientists who do “data curation,” another side of the same coin.) I have a discussion question: Are we agreed that “effective curation” can only be done by those with MLIS degrees, or can we understand curation as a socially enacted practice that is evolving to include users? I know this is the elephant in the room often; is the role/value of the librarian challenged by the “crowd,” which can be so effective and random all at the same time? Hope we can discuss this from many angles.
